They are traditionally gifted on first anniversaries as a symbol of ongoing love and devotion. To me, carnations represent the underdog of the floral world...the shy, reserved, late blooming, slightly nerdy type that gets completely underestimated and taken for granted until they end up starting a tech company that takes over the universe.
